Wolff Preparing to Divest Shareholding Valuing Mercedes Formula 1 Team at £4.6bn

Team Principal Wolff has guided Mercedes to historic achievements in F1

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff is engaged in final negotiations to offload part of his shareholding in the Mercedes Formula 1 team.

The deal values Mercedes at £4.6bn – an unprecedented figure for an F1 team – following the McLaren team was appraised at £3.5bn in an adjustment to ownership structure last September.

The Austrian executive, who holds one-third of Mercedes F1, plans to divest a shareholding approximately 5%.

The 53-year-old will remain as team principal and CEO should the deal proceed.

Shareholder Breakdown

Remaining partners in the team are Mercedes and industrial group Ineos Group, who both hold a third of the company.

An official representative stated: "We will be making no comment on the matter. The management structure of Mercedes F1 stays unaltered, and all three partners are fully committed to continued achievements of Mercedes-Benz in Formula One."

Valuation Increase

This arrangement would represent a substantial rise in worth of Mercedes F1 since Ineos acquired its share for £208m in 2022.

The rise reflects the growth in valuations of Formula 1 outfits in the past few years due to the growing popularity of Formula 1 globally.

This was also seen in the success of the F1 movie starring Hollywood star Brad Pitt, which was released last summer and earned over $630 million (£458m) at cinemas worldwide.

It is Pitt's most successful movie and the highest-earning sports film ever released.

Present Standings

The Mercedes team are second in the constructors' championship, trailing McLaren, with three Grands Prix remaining this season.

Mercedes' primary racer George Russell has won 2 of the 21 races so far and is fourth in the drivers' championship behind McLaren's Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, and Red Bull's Max Verstappen.

The team secured a record eight straight team titles and seven drivers' titles, six won by Lewis Hamilton and one for Nico Rosberg, between 2014 and 2021.
