This marks the conclusion of an iconic period for long-running series, with Toei Animation revealing a new production schedule for One Piece, which has been airing for more than 25 years and featured dozens of non-canon storylines. Commencing in January, once the current storyline concludes, the animated series will take a three-month break until April, when the next major arc begins.
Updated Production Plan
Going forward, the series will produce a pair of cours every annually for a cap of two dozen installments. Toei states this will help the anime to “explore further into the heart of the universe — including more content, tempo, and pacing of the original manga.” Yet, producers end by promising “exciting surprises” during the hiatus period, which means additional One Piece content, such as Netflix's live-action season 2, set to premiere during this gap.
Previous Hiatus Benefits
The series anime previously took a half-year break that started in October 2024 and ended in April 2025. The intermission was for the animators to enhance the animation quality and let the manga to build a lead to avoid a faster anime pace and lengthy recap episodes. The show greatly benefited from this break, and it has been able to supply viewers with countless fight scenes, high-quality animation, and reduced non-canon content than previously.
Adopting Modern Trends
While some recap episodes appeared during the recent run, the positive effects of this updated approach greatly outweigh the odd pause in the story. This also gives the manga, which is currently in the middle of the latest arc, to gain more ground on the adaptation. According to the news, this may lead to one episode of the series adapting one chapter, with others alternatively covering one and a half chapters or more to make up for scheduling.
It's the end of a generation for anime, as the epic saga is the final major title to ditch the old-school way of creation, which prioritized airing for most of the calendar. This explains why iconic series such as Bleach, and of course itself have so many filler arcs, and the standard of the animation can change drastically between installments and the next. Today, series creation is organized in cours, with a couple at most releasing each annually, enabling improved visuals and greater accuracy to the original work.
