Matteo Cancellieri Shows Brief Sparks of Brilliance in Bright Spot for Unstable Lazio

The feeling at Lazio's home ground was far from happy this past Saturday. Lazio were trailing against Torino, an opponent that had allowed 10 goals while managing only two goals in their last five league matches. Ultras from the Curva Nord were concluding their most recent demonstration in an ongoing feud with chairman Claudio Lotito.

The Campaign Falling Apart?

Had their campaign falling apart, or had there never been a thread maintaining its structure to start with? Lazio reinstated Maurizio Sarri to lead the team during the off-season, only for him admitted that the management had not mentioned a registration embargo they were facing for financial irregularities. Reports that he might quit were without basis, but he acknowledged that Lotito had "misled" him.

The Biancocelesti were just as chaotic during matches as off the field, overcoming Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but being defeated in the rest of their first five games, which included the capital clash. At any given moment, it has been hard to ascertain if they're getting better or collapsing.

Matteo's Unforeseen Return

One individual continued to smile through it. Matteo Cancellieri was not even supposed to remain with Lazio during this campaign. He completed the previous campaign with Parma on loan and, during the summer break, his owning club were advocating for him to extend his stay a while longer. The signing restriction forced a rethink. They were unable to thin their squad lacking backup options.

He signed in the first place during Sarri's previous tenure, then a 20-year-old product of Verona's academy. He recorded 20 matches in the league with the club in the 2022-23 season, all but one of those coming off the bench. The ex- sporting director, Igli Tare, whose tenure ended at the end of that season, later stated Sarri of "telling everyone Cancellieri was destined for stardom then never playing him."

Discovering His Best Role

Maybe Sarri was continuing to attempt to identify the nature of Cancellieri's abilities. Billed as a wide forward when he joined, Cancellieri yet was deployed for most of that campaign as a struggling deputy to Ciro Immobile at No 9. In 63 appearances while playing for Empoli and Parma over the last two seasons, his tally was seven goals. Shoehorn
