Right-leaning responses to the partial disclosure of files involving the Epstein case have been mixed, with certain backers of the previous administration highlighting the noticeable appearance of former President Clinton and other Democrats in images, while others expressed frustration over how extensive censorship cast former President Trump and Republicans in a unfavorable manner.
Justice Department Defends Censorship with Fervent Hyperbole
Administration officials justified the redactions with fervent exaggerated language. “Never in U.S. history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Justice Department been this open with the American people about such a sensitive law enforcement issue,” declared Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who released a six-page letter describing the redaction procedure.
Questions Raised by Redactions
While the former president's identity and image appear in some of the materials, the extensive redactions prompt serious questions about what may be hidden behind them. A number of Republicans immediately called for greater transparency.
“People are furious and disengaging,” posted Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a online statement, Republican Congressman Thomas Massie said the censorship violate the law, and implied that a subsequent Congress may move to remove the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Unfortunately, today’s document release egregiously does not adhere to both the intent and the wording of the act,” he continued.
Some Rightwing Figures Swing In Support of the Release
But, some conservative pundits and former President loyalists came out strongly in support of the administration.
The release—from a DOJ led by key Trump ally Pam Bondi—contains scores of pages that are entirely censored, and numerous of the men depicted in photographs have their identities obscured.
But a few are not, including high-profile individuals like Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The presence of the former president, especially, allowed certain conservative figures to go on the attack.
“This is quite rich how the political left falsely accused President Trump of being a pedophile, only for the Trump DOJ to release Epstein files that show Bill Clinton swimming nude with a pedophile,” stated right-wing commentator Laura Loomer.
“Recently released Epstein Files reveal Bill Clinton without a shirt in a hot tub with a woman that is other than his spouse Hillary Clinton,” wrote attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only one explanation Epstein would photograph a US President with a girl in a hot tub: Leverage.”
Former President Spokesperson Issues Statement
Clinton has consistently said he was aware of no criminal activity by Epstein and has never been accused to have engaged in any wrongdoing. “The administration has not been hiding those files for an extended period only to release them late on a weekend to protect Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s representative Angel Ureña stated in a comment.
“This is about shielding themselves from future revelations, or from information they’ll try and hide permanently. Therefore they can release as many low-quality 20-plus-year-old photographs as they desire, but this is not about Bill Clinton. Not previously, never will be,” the statement added.
Broader Rightwing Commentary Remains Muted
However, overall comment on the political right was relatively subdued following the disclosure, particularly when juxtaposed against the loud demands for transparency that came before the congressional vote to enact a law mandating the files' publication.
Loomer, who not long ago accepted media access at the Defense Department, had been among the loudest advocates for a complete disclosure. Earlier this year, she chastised the administration generally and Bondi in particular after a group of rightwing influencers were provided physical folders of materials that contained no previously unseen information.
